BSc Microbiology (University of Leeds)
I’m from Wakefield originally and graduated from the University of Leeds with a BSc in Microbiology in 2014. As a part of my undergraduate degree, I undertook an integrated year in industry working as a microscopist in Reading.
I decided to stay in Leeds for my PhD after being awarded a place on the Wellcome Trust Programme The Molecular Basis of Biological Mechanisms, as it gave me the freedom to tailor my own project. My current research uses cryo-electron microscopy to determine the structures of viral pathogens, their receptor interactions and conformational changes. The ultimate aim of this is to provide a platform for the development of novel antiviral therapeutics. In addition, I have a general interest in the development of cryo-EM, especially in regards to its use in rational drug design and structural vaccinology.
In my spare time, I enjoy snowboarding and watching Rugby (preferably with beer).
