B.Sc. Biochemistry with year in industry (University of York)
Originally from Bath, for my undergraduate degree I studied biochemistry at the University of York. This included a research project studying protein interactions in the Gram-negative bacterial outer-membrane. I also undertook a placement year at Heptares Therapeutics, working with GPCRs.
Throughout my studies, I found myself most interested in how the structure and dynamics of proteins informs their function. I therefore decided to pursue a PhD in structural biology, choosing the University of Leeds to take advantage of the world class cryo-electron microscopy facilities here.
My current project focuses on the BAM complex, a large protein machine responsible for folding proteins into the outer-membrane of Gram-negative bacteria. By solving novel structures of this complex, I hope to contribute to mechanistic understanding of this process.
